How to ensure your business remains safe when hiring

Waiting for interview

When you are hiring employees, it is important that you ensure you implement a number of safety measures.

Employing somebody who is not fit, qualified, or eligible for a position in your company, but through lying, manipulation, and deceit has managed to secure a position, can be an absolute disaster. We live in an age where people are apparently very good at deceiving one another; we live in an age where people can cover their tracks, change their identity, and adopt the identity of other people in order to get themselves better positions and jobs.

In this article today, we will hope to tell you how you can ensure that your business remains safe when you are employing people, and how you can ensure you do not unwittingly employ somebody who is not fit, and who does not deserve to be employed in your company. Here is how to ensure safety when hiring new employees.

Criminal Vetting

You can quite quickly check if a person is a criminal or has had a criminal record before through criminal vetting. These government regulated Enhanced Check ups will allow you to establish whether or not a new potential employee has a criminal record or has been involved in criminal activity in the past. Criminal vetting is absolutely essential and you should never hire a new employee without asking them whether or not they have been involved in criminality, and without checking if they have been involved in criminality.

Google Search

If an employee has passed a criminal check, you may still want to type their name in on Google. They could have had a previous conviction which is spent, and because of this, it will not show up. A quick Google search will yield results if they have, in fact, been involved in criminality at one point in their life. A Google search should be something you do with every potential employee so that you can ensure they are not of bad character and that they will not bring down your company and give you a bad reputation.

Character References

You should always request character references when you are vetting a potential employee. These days, very few companies do this anymore, which we suppose is because they are very easy to falsify. However, if you ask for character references and ask each reference to authenticate who they are, you will find those dodgy prospective employees will quickly go silent. Ask for character references so as to ensure you only hire who you think you are hiring and so you do not fall for any scams or fraud on the part of employees trying to get jobs they are not qualified for.

Work History

When a prospective hire gives you their history of work, be sure to vet it carefully and to follow up and ask every single place whether or not the prospective hire worked there. This is a good way to ensure that new employees are not just making up an employment history and that they really are qualified to work in your company, business, or place of work. Many people will attempt to make up a work history to qualify for a job – do not fall for this ruse and be sure to verify and check.

Just like work history, people will make up qualifications. On a prospective hire’s resume, if the qualifications seem too good to be true, then you must vet and reference them with the university or school to ensure they are true. Employees who lie about qualifications can get into a lot of trouble and can actually receive jail time. You should never lie about qualifications on a resume – if you are an employer, you should always check. This generation has seen more school dropouts than any other, so it can’t hurt to be careful and to check the history and credentials of your employees.

Social Media Checks

Social media checks are another way to vet potential employees. Search their name on social media and find out how they conduct themselves in their private lives. If they are constantly drunk, of bad character, and behave irresponsibly on social media, it’s fair to say your business can do without them. Always check on social media to see how your employees behave outside of work. This is not an invasion of privacy, and rather, it is your right and something you are entitled to do. Always check your employees thoroughly.

We hope, with this page, that you now know a few ways with which you can verify your prospective hires’ credentials, and how you can ensure you do not wind up employing a liar and a cheat. We hope you benefit from this page and that you enjoyed the read. Thank you!
